Understanding the Need for Ethical Treatment: A Discussion with Heather Hayes

With the constant stream of unethical practices in treatment programs, it is time to unite and be ethical.  Heather Hayes discusses some of these unethical practices, and what is being done to raise awareness and make changes. She has been a uniting force in our industry and is taking a leadership role in making a difference. Unite for Ethics Now, a group that Heather founded, consists of a Board of Directors made up of parent advocates, addictionologist, treatment center CEOs, government officials, and attorneys. This group is working together to design ethical blueprints of standards and education for good quality care for consumers, providers, and professionals.

Heather developed the Heather Hayes & Associates Ethics Pledge for treatment providers to sign stating they will not participate in unethical behavior and are committed to doing the right thing.  Lifeskills South Florida proudly signed this ethics pledge. Lifeskills South Florida has provided ethical treatment since 1991 to individuals 18 years of age and older who may be facing challenges with psychiatric disorders, such as depression, Bipolar Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, and co-occurring substance use disorders. Our certified and licensed clinicians provide a comprehensive clinical program using five distinct tracks: Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Chemical Dependency, Trauma/PTSD, and Cognitive Remediation.  We understand the need to meet individuals where they are in their disorder and customize a treatment program for their unique needs. At Lifeskills, we believe individuals can change their lives, and we provide the tools needed for empowerment and sustained long-term recovery.

Listen as Klay Weaver, CEO at Lifeskills South Florida, and Heather talk more about ethics and ethical behavior in addiction treatment.
