According to the Linehan Institute, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) was originally developed to treat chronically suicidal individuals diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Now recognized as the standard psychological treatment for this population, research has shown DBT is effective in treating a wide range of other disorders such as substance use disorder, depressive disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and eating disorders For many clients, DBT assists clients towards establishing a life worth living.

What Is Dialectical Behavior Therapy?

In dialectical behavior therapy, clients and therapists work together to establish unhealthy behaviors and how they can develop healthier ones. Similar to cognitive behavior therapy, DBT is a solution-focused therapy that works to find ways for clients to begin living happier and healthier lives.

In DBT, we address many of the following types of behaviors and areas:

  • Life-threatening behaviors
  • Therapy-Interfering behaviors
  • Quality of life behaviors
  • Skills acquisition

If a loved one has any of these types of behaviors, DBT can be very effective. Research has shown DBT to be successful in reducing suicidal behavior, non-suicidal self-injury, psychiatric hospitalization, treatment dropout, addiction, anger, depression and improving social and global functioning.

Many of the following character traits can be treated and managed with DBT: impulsivity, suicidal behaviors/ideations, feelings of emptiness and hopelessness, feelings pertaining to abandonment, unstable interpersonal relationships, Inability to keep up with school or employment, and engaging in dangerous or life-threatening behaviors. With the combination of commitment, motivation, and practice, Dialectical Behavior Therapy can help a loved one become more regulated and self-sufficient.
