Over the past few weeks Alan Levine, co-founder of Addiction Recovery Legal Services, LLC. has given us in-depth information regarding the Florida Marchman Act.  In our final part of the Lifeskills South Florida video series, Alan discusses the criteria used in the Marchman Act. The threshold for an individual begins when someone is impaired by drugs or alcohol (may not be actively using), and as result of that impairment, their skewed judgment makes them incapable of appreciating the need for further care. The person must also present a harm to themselves or others. Alan also discusses the assessment, timing, and additional strategies of the Marchman Act. (more…)

Cognitive remediation therapy (CRT), also called cognitive enhancement therapy, helps a person learn skills to manage their everyday life. CRT aims to reduce problems with cognition, such as attention, memory, and executive functioning. As a mental illness progresses, cognitive skills suffer and become more impaired. This decline will begin to interfere with a person’s normal functioning in relationships, at work and in school. Dual diagnosis, also commonly known as co-occurring disorders, is used when individuals experience a mental health disorder and a substance use disorder simultaneously. The Key Substance Use and Mental Health Indicators in the United States noted that of the 10.4 million Americans suffering from a severe mental illness and the 19 million suffering from a substance use disorder in the past year, 8.2 million had a co-occurring disorder.
